How You Can Help

This is the time of the year that we reach out to the community for blankets and other warm bedding (including towels) to help keep the dogs warm during the cold weather. There are approximately 100 dogs here, and many are bully breeds who have short hair and get cold quite easily, so we go through a lot of blankets and can never have too many.

Dog sweaters and coats are also appreciated.

These dogs, who have so little, depend on your kindness and generosity. Thanks from all of us.

All donations can be left at the Yonkers Shelter, 120 Fullerton Avenue, weekdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and weekends from noon to 3:30 p.m.

More Ways to Help

Following in the great American tradition of volunteering, the Yonkers Animal Shelter volunteers share many critical tasks with the staff without which the shelter could not adequately function.

They also spend precious time with the animals -- playing, walking and helping with their socialization skills as so many of them have been neglected and abused. With a little love and caring these animals will eventually become companions to children, adults and senior citizens, filling a void for people who may be alone.

Volunteers, for any cause, reap rewards for themselves in terms of satisfaction and newfound acquaintances. But there's something very special when a volunteer gets a lick of thanks from a newfound four-legged friend.
