The Dog Too Old to Adopt

By Roger Van Tassell
This is a story of a dog who resided several years ago in the Yonkers Animal Shelter. He has passed on since then, but had the best years of his life for a time.

GRANDPA was a small shepherd mix that had been in the shelter for over three years, and in that time, he watched many dogs come and go but he remained. He was seven years old, but looked a lot older, with white fur on his muzzle and a coat that was very thin.

He was cared for primarily by Janice and Lois, who always seemed to gravitate to the downtrodden.

Life was pretty much the same routine every day, with a couple of hours in an outside cage for a couple of hours in the fresh air (actually, the air is never fresh at the shelter), and then back inside into a 2x3 foot cage for the rest of the day and night.

Many of the animals display what is called the shelter syndrome due to the stress of confinement and incessant barking. This condition manifest itself in spinning in their cage an uncontrollable barking., with aggression being displayed at times. Grandpa did not display any of these signs. Because of this, the volunteers decided that they would make an effort to get him a home. To begin with they named him Georgie which they thought would stimulate more interest than Grandpa. One day in the spring, the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery was holding an adoption for several of the rescue groups in the lower Westchester County. The YAS was invited to bring some dogs for adoption. Georgie did not know it, but this was going to be the beginning of a new life for him.

A young lady named Kathy had just lost her shepherd after 16 years and was in deep mourning. She had come to the cemetery to pay tribute, and to mourn her loss. She did not know that there was going to be an adoption that day.
Impulsively, Kathy came to look at the shelter dogs, and said that she wanted to adopt one of the dogs that nobody wanted. It was at this point that she was introduced to Georgie, and a love affair began.

For months on end, Kathy would bring Georgie by the shelter to say hello. Each time he had on a new outfit. His body had filled out and his coat of fur, once thin and dull, was magnificent. It was hard to believe that this was the same dog.
Since then Georgie has helped Kathy overcome her loss, and although her original dog will forever occupy a special place in her heart, she had found a way to smile again, he had truly found a home.
